Resilient and Sustainable Operations

Enviromentally Aware

Across our operations and supply chain, we are continuously looking at tools and innovations that can improve efficiency, product safety, and quality while supporting sustainability efforts for our planet. We strive to ensure safe product handling, manage greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, improve energy efficiency, minimize waste, and maximize recycling. We are committed to delivering value and doing our best to protect the environment where we live and work.

Climate adaptation and energy management

We are taking bold steps to address climate issues. Our focus has moved beyond operational efficiencies to focus on adaptation strategies, including those that address social impacts and the risks to our physical assets. We believe energy management is critical to sustainability and an area of continuous improvement as we work to deploy efficiency measures across the organization. We also seek opportunities to enhance the efficiency and reliability of transportation. We work with all our fleet management and courier partners who deliver our inventory to optimize routes to reduce miles driven and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions

We collect and analyze data from across the enterprise to calculate our total GHG emissions for AmerisourceBergen. The chart to the left shows our most recently reported data for FY19 and FY20.

In FY20, AmerisourceBergen reduced our Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 10.5% from FY19. We have formally committed to set a science-based target in line with the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi) guidance. In the interim, we set a goal to reduce our Scope 1 & 2 emissions by 5% by end of FY22 from a FY19 baseline.

As we work to integrate Alliance Healthcare’s footprint, we will post our verified FY21 GHG emissions data and our revised FY19 baseline in March 2022.

Waste management, recycling & sustainable packaging

AmerisourceBergen is committed to recycling as well as the reduction of waste generation. We are taking innovative, strategic steps to create a more sustainable footprint. In most offices worldwide, we cut paper waste and look for opportunities to utilize digital communications.

Last year, we partnered with a waste management solutions company to help streamline and optimize our network. We now have better insight into our waste portfolio and can better strategize for reduction or diversion opportunities. In FY20, our US Human Health locations achieved 79% waste diversion.

AmerisourceBergen is also committed to sustainable packaging and removing single-use, petroleum-based materials like plastics and polystyrene foam from our operations and sourcing more ecological options. We utilize a sustainable, cold-chain packaging solution that includes reusable totes and plant-based, phase-change material ice packs across our human health distribution centers.

In FY 2020, we produced a total of 20,964 metric tons of waste.

Innovation spotlight

Packaging innovation reduced DELO's carbon footprint and creates process improvements.

In FY20. our World Courier business partnered with a customer to identify an alternative packaging solution to polystyrene coolers to reduce waste and shipping-related emissions.
